Our thoughts are hearts are heavy with the news of Tom ‘Burgandy’ Humbers Passing. He was always a big supporter of 16volt and his presence will be missed. Sad news. Hopefully he’s a DJ in the sky hanging with all the fallen family of the underground. Tom was best known for his contributions as a DJ on the UK’s Dark Asylum Radio. RIP brother.

Okay Fans! We need your help. I am excited to let you know we are beginning the process of producing a 16volt documentary. We really want you to be a part of it and are hoping you could take a little video of yourself interview style speaking about 16volt how you heard about us. What you think. Any good stories etc. Just have some fun and make it cool. You don’t have to get too fancy. An iPhone camera recording in HD will suffice but feel free to go bananas if you’d like. We really need your help on this one and again, we really want you to be a part if it. We’d like to get videos back in the next month or so. Not. A huge rush but the sooner the better. Also. Any photos or videos you have would be awesome too. We are nothing without you and want our fans to be a part of this.
Love and respect.
Eric and Mike.

It’s quite the coincidence that as I drove into work yesterday listening to 16volt’s “American Porn Songs//remixed” album that I decided to use my Android phone to check my email account only to find an inbox message waiting from 16volt themselves. It seems they are looking fans to take some videos of themselves talking about what 16volt means to them, to share some stories or pictures about 16volt, or just how they have influenced them over the years to use in an upcoming documentary. I’m not very photogenic and have always preferred to be “the guy behind the guy” so I don’t think that I will be recording myself anytime soon, but I wanted to talk briefly about Eric Powell , Mike Peoples and company, and what those guys have meant to me. 16volt are one of those bands who have had a major impact on my life since about 1993 when their debut album, Wisdom, came out. I can still recall as if it was yesterday, clipping out an advertisement for them that was in the back of an “Industrial Nation” magazine and sending them a check and then waiting patiently for their newly pressed cd to arrive. It was with great excitement and anticipation that I popped the newly received cd into my boom box to hear the sounds of “Motorskill”, “Wisdom”, “Head of Stone” and “Filthy Love of Fire”. (by the way, Motorskill would come in at #230 on the 101 greatest industrial songs project). It was everything that I wanted an “industrial” album to be at the time as I was in love with Ministry, NIN, Skinny Puppy, Diatribe and metal as well. One could not overlook Dave Oglivie’s production on the album but also Chicago Trax’s Fluffy’s influence too. This became a seminal album in my collection that I have since had to purchase 3 times over now for wearing the cds out! I repeated this action again when they released their second album, “Skin”. I again sent them back a check and the ad out of the back of a magazine (could have been Permission at this point) and this time added the classic “hot girl with gun” tee shirt which I still wear today (so yes it’s one of the original prints where she has white eyes and not the current repress where she has red eyes) to the order . This time it was such songs as “Skin”, “Uplifting”, and especially “Perfectly Fake” that I gravitated towards and also the ones that had me hooked. It wasn’t long after 1996’s crushing album, “Letdowncrush” that I became friends with William Tucker as well as Stella Katsoudas who had both performed on the album. (Stella laying down some backing vocals and Tucker providing some guitar licks) and both of them had talked about how great that album was. Even back then Eric and company were ahead of the curve and in some ways groundbreaking, than some of their contemporary artists who may have been signed to major labels or had bigger advertising budgets behind them that 16volt would never come close to0. Now the internet had finally started to mature and become more and more accessible and I finally exchanged some emails with Eric Powell as he submitted a few demos he had been working on at the time to WTII Records. We were not in the position back then to sign them to a proper contract that would have increased the exposure and fan base that they already had but we had stayed in touch after that. As many of you know I had added “promoter/booker” to my resume a few years later and I finally had the opportunity to work with Eric, Mike and 16volt (and Jared Louche to boot) and brought the Chemlab/16volt Midi Ghetto Tour to Chicago for a sold out show at the (now defunct) legendary Darkroom.

Now I know that I have led a very blessed life and I have to mention that I don’t get star struck very often anymore. Yes,I did a short stint alongside a tour with Rob Zombie/Monster Magnet, done my share of blow and strippers alongside some pretty serious “rock” groups, gone to hockey games with Al Jourgensen, hung out with Jim thrilwell and a million other people (or so it seemed) at Danny Flesher’s house, passed on an opportunity to have dinner with my all time favorite band, The Jesus and Mary Chain, etc etc etc but it wasn’t until Eric Powell called me personally that I finally lost my shit. I mean here was a musician that I followed and was an influence to me and here I was talking to him on the phone, like really in person, and HE called me! To top that off he and Jared both came over to my apartment during that Chicago date and that really flipped my noodle. They were both such down to earth and sincere guys that I couldn’t believe it. Imagine how weird it was to have them come over to your apartment only to see 2 framed posters of “supercoolnothing” hanging up on your walls. Yeah I know this makes me sound weird and probably a little creepy but it was so nice seeing such talented musicians whom I greatly respected also turn out to be “real” and “honest” people behind the scenes.

Funny that this note comes right before Father’s Day is celebrated because this is where Eric Powell and 16volt have really influenced me. It’s difficult being in the music business (even in the small capacity that I am), hold down a full time job/career and also be a good parent and role model. This is where people such as Eric Powell, Jason Novak (Acumen Nation), Wade Alin(Christ Analogue), Jim Marcus (Go Fight/Die Warzau), Jared Louche (Chemlab), John J. Verbos (Am.psych) and Chris DeMarcus (Stiff Valentine) really shine to me and where their talents truly lie, and that is in being good father’s who put their families first. Whenever I have bad days or am overwhelmed I find myself thinking that if these guys can set a good example and be a great parent the so can I, a lot of the good relationship that I have with my son can in many ways be attributed to them. Maybe it’s the age group that we are all at, some of the chips that we all have on our shoulders, or maybe there is just something to this “cold wave” genre that helps us all of us become better parents and like a true “family”…but I digress

I have since become friends with all of the aforementioned artists and bands and have had the opportunity to get to know everyone on a more personal level and even now talk to Eric on a regular basis. There was a time when people thought that 16volt might just fade away but all I see them do is put out stronger and stronger and more mature albums. While I have mentioned some of their earlier works that truly got me into 16volt, you can’t go wrong with listening to any of their albums from “SuperCoolNothing” to 2011’s “Beating Dead Horses” and in a live setting there is none better. Having the chance to work with Mike Peoples, Steve White (16volt, kmfdm, pig) and Eric again on last years Jamie Duffy Memorial show (where they turned in one of the most powerful sets of the night) and seeing the influence that Jamie had on them really let me see what type of quality people that 16volt (and the rest of our Cold Wave brother’s) really are, and in working closely with Eric (and Jason Novak) on this year’s Cold Wave’s II festival it only reinforces my respect that I have for those guys.

I have been fortunate over the past few years to have 16volt thank me or WTII Records at points on their album credits that I wanted to take the time to say thank you back to them. I’m not sure if this note really gives them the credit they deserve or contained any good stories or memories to have had you keep reading this note so far but if you haven’t checked out 16volt before or if it’s been awhile , do yourselves a favor and pick up an album or dig out some of your old ones and you will see why they are such an influence on people like Jim Semonik (Rein[forced]), Sean Payne (Cyanotic), Eric Gottesman(Everything Goes Cold) and myself. 16volt are truly the flag bearers for the “American Cold Wave” scene. They are only getting better with age and I look forward to where they take us next.

If you have any stories, memories, pictures, or just your respect that you would like to share with 16volt please take a hd video of yourselves and send it to Eric and Mike. Send stuff to info@16volt.com You can use http://wetransfer.com/
